Bail denied for alleged child rapist Neville Betteridge
BAIL has been refused for a Sunshine Coast man accused of numerous child sex offences dating back to his time as a teacher in the Blue Mountains in the 1960s.
Neville Gilbert Betteridge, 72, was arrested at his Mooloolaba home on Tuesday and extradited to New South Wales to face court.
Appearing via video link before the Sydney Central Local Court yesterday, Mr Betteridge pleaded not guilty to one count of buggery and three counts of indecent assault of a male.
Police prosecutor Matthew Carlin alleged Mr Betteridge carried out the sexual offences on students under his care when he was a teacher and dorm master between 1967 and 1970.
Magistrate Leslie Mabbutt denied bail and ordered the man to return to Penrith Local Court for mention on May 20.
The extradition was a joint operation involving police from the Blue Mountains Local Area Command and the Maroochydore Child Abuse Unit. -ARM NEWSDESK
