RECORD affordability, high level of choice and significant performance and comfort attributes have been listed as key reasons for a new car sales record in Australia for 2015.
Australians bought 1,555,408 new passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles last year - 3.8% more than 2014 and 1.7% higher than the previous record year for new car sales in 2013.
Toyota was the top selling brand with 17.8% of the market, followed by Mazda (9.9%) and Holden (8.9%) while Toyota also scored best-selling car in 2015 with its Corolla model scoring 42,073 sales. It was followed by the Mazda3 (38,644), Toyota HiLux (35,161) and Hyundai i30 (32,306).
The record 2015 full-year sales results were revealed in Sydney today by Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) Chief Executive Tony Weber who stated: "It is clear that there has never been a better time to buy a new car."
Mr Weber listed the addition of new models with ever-improving performance and comfort levels, record affordability, and low rates or zero finance as key drivers for the record number of sales.
SUVs in particular continued to boom in 2015, with these types of vehicles accounting for 35.4% of the market, up from 31.7% in 2014. Five new small SUVs launched in Australia in 2015 helped this segment score the biggest growth, with small SUV sales up 27.4% over 2014.
Strong sales are also expected in 2016 according to the FCAI, with new car sales again forecast to break 1.1 million this year.
