Aussie golfer faces third cancer battle

AUSSIE golfer Jarrod Lyle is bracing for a third cancer battle after blood tests returned abnormal results and he was admitted to hospital.

Lyle has twice battled and beaten acute myeloid leukaemia - once in 1998 and again in 2012 - and tests results are expected to confirm the disease has returned.

The 35-year-old, who played in Australia and on the US PGA Tour before stepping away from full-time golf in recent years, is in the Royal Melbourne Hospital preparing for his latest battle.

"A routine blood test conducted earlier this week returned abnormal results and Jarrod was immediately admitted to hospital and placed under the care of his previous medical specialist. He will remain there at least until a full diagnosis has been made," a statement from the Lyle family said.

"He has undergone several tests and will have several more in the coming days. At this point, we have not yet received complete test results, so there is no definitive diagnosis and we do not have an agreed treatment plan.

"We cannot speculate about anything until we get more information. We are grateful to be surrounded by incredibly supportive people and we truly appreciate your consideration and respect for our privacy at this time."

Lyle, from country Victoria, first beat leukaemia as a teenager before embarking on his professional golfing career which took him around the world and earned him two victories.

He stepped away from the tour to spend more time with his wife and two daughters, but was contemplating playing once again on the PGA Tour of Australasia and pro-ams around the country.

But will now take an indefinite break from a playing.
