Artist who jokes that he’s '70 plus GST' wins award
LOCAL expressionist Mal Hodges has once again taken out the Betty Quelhurst Award for best oil in show at the Royal Queensland Art Society's BIG Art Awards.
The smallest canvas Mal has ever submitted to the competition, Lost in Paradise won the top gong at this year's event over more than 200 other entries in the oil category.
A multi-award winning artist renowned for his love of colour both in his paintings and life in general, the inspirational Mal (who characteristically jokes that he's "70 plus GST") said he was "honoured" to be this year's Betty Quelhurst winner.
Quelhurst (1919-2008) was a well-known Queensland artist who was a finalist in the 1954 Archibald Prize.
The Royal Queensland Art Society is located at 25 Broadbeach Blvd, between Armrick and Chelsea Sts, Broadbeach.
Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm, Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 5pm. Entry is free.
Phone 5592 0440.
If you happen to see Mal at RQAS, where he also is a popular art tutor, don't forget to mention that you read all about him in the Seniors paper.
