ARE Dr Lucien Blake and Ballarat ready for the 1960s?

The ABC's popular period drama The Doctor Blake Mysteries, starring Craig McLachlan, returns for a fourth season with more cases for the police surgeon to solve as Australia enters a new decade.

Anna McGahan joins the cast as the new local reporter Rose, who happens to find herself - camera in hand - right in the thick of a murder while covering the stopover of a high-profile car race.

"I guess you could say Rose is a bit provocative; not in any femme fatale way, she's just assertive," McGahan told APN.

"She wants information and she's very nosy and rightfully so, it's her job. She's not afraid of anything and she wants to get her hands dirty, which is quite confronting for the middle-aged and middle to upper class men of Ballarat."

QUT graduate McGahan is best known for her roles in Underbelly and House Husbands.

Her ambitious new character represents some of the changes in store for the residents of Ballarat in a decade of social and political upheaval.

"Here is this modern, feminist girl from Melbourne who comes in and her costumes reflect that; she's very bright," McGahan said.

"She's pushing the boundaries by wanting to go further and make more of her career, by seeking out these crime stories... she's told to photograph the flower show but chases crimes instead.

"It's lovely to see this youthful and vibrant cheekiness come in. That's what Blake does too; he stirs things up and they have a connection because of that."

But she and the good doctor don't see eye-to-eye straight away.

"She just keeps turning up and she's quite annoying, but she does have her place," she said.

"At first she's certainly a point of friction. She's getting to know the town and she learns the hard way."

The new season also sees a mysterious figure from Dr Blake's past show up on his doorstep.

The unexpected arrival threatens his developing relationship with Jean and leaves him questioning his future with the police.

Season four of The Doctor Blake Mysteries premieres on ABC1 tonight at 8.30pm.
