Wreck of Captain Cook's HMAS Endeavour may have been found

AMERICAN researchers believe they have found the wreck of Captain James Cook's ship, HMS Endeavour.

Captain Cook sailed Endeavour up Australia's east coast and claimed the land for Britain. He also created detailed maps of it, New Zealand and Hawaii.

Endeavour was renamed Lord Sandwich and used in a blockade during the American Revolution.

It was scuttled with 12 other ships in 1778 in the lead-up to the Battle of Rhode Island.

Researchers believe they have identified the Endeavour off Newport Harbour.
