Woman dead and man missing in remote NT floods
A WOMAN has drowned and a man is missing as a result of floods tearing through areas of the Northern Territory.
The 59-year-old woman was caught in a car with four other people in floodwaters in the remote Aboriginal community of Beswick, east of Katherine.
Northern Territory Police Commander Bruce Porter said officers travelling to the area in a helicopter found the stranded vehicle on Sunday night.
The remaining four occupants survived.
"This is the second person who has been washed away in a flooded creek since Christmas," he said.
"Again, I urge people to avoid taking unnecessary risks on the roads and avoid driving into floodways."
There was still no sign yesterday of a 28-year-old man swept away in floodwaters near Peppimenarti on Christmas Day.
Heavy rain has hampered the search.
Three people were airlifted to safety from a cattle station near Dorisvale Crossing, with four others choosing to stay on the property as floodwaters receded.
The waters at Dorisvale Crossing were at the second highest level on record, falling behind only the 1998 floods that claimed three lives.
