Victoria set to ban smoking in outdoor eating areas

THE Victorian Government has announced plans to introduce tough new smoking laws bringing it in line with other states across the nation.

Smokers will be banned from lighting up in outdoor dining areas including beer gardens, cafes, and takeaway shops under the plan.

Those caught breaching the new laws could face fines of up to $758.

Smoking bans currently apply at Victorian public building entrances, train and tram stations, in cars with children, playgrounds and underage sporting venues and matches.

The changes are set to take effect from August 1, 2017 after widespread consultation with relevant industries, including the hospitality sector.
