Tasmania struck by fires and floods

TASMANIA'S Overland Track was closed yesterday and bushwalkers were airlifted to safety following persistent bushfires.

The ABC reported the Tasmanian police helicopter was being used to evacuate 240 walkers from the track.

After being assailed for weeks by bushfires, some parts of the state are battling flash flooding after heavy rains.

Houses in the small town of St Marys in the north-east were inundated and more rain was expected.

Lightning strikes in the north-west sparked more than 12 new fires yesterday.
