Supporters want Tony Abbott back in the Cabinet

SPECULATION is mounting about a cabinet reshuffle in the new year and supporters of former prime minister Tony Abbott believe he should be considered for the new ministry.

Following Jamie Briggs's resignation and Mal Brough standing down from his ministerial portfolio, Liberal senator Eric Abetz said Mr Abbott should be reconsidered for the frontbench.

Mr Abetz said he did not want to pre-empt a possible reshuffle, but added: "I simply, objectively, make the observation that the former prime minister has a wealth of experience that is available to the nation and I hope that he makes it available."

Mr Abetz said he believed Mr Abbott and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull could work together.

VALUED MEMORABILIA: Daphne Heaton holding the plaque issued to Private Roberts' family following his death in 1918. The personalised plaque, often referred to as the "Dead Man's Penny", was issued to next-of-kin of all service personnel who were killed as a result of the war.
