Scout leader charged with assault

A SCOUT leader has been charged over the alleged indecent assault of a 14-year-old female scout during the Australian movement's annual jamboree at Appin in New South Wales last week.

The alleged assault happened last Monday at the jamboree, with the girl reporting the incident to another scout leader, but the organisation did not report it to police until last Friday.

Scouts Australia chief commissioner Chris Bates acknowledged the delay, saying there was a "lack of understanding of scout protocol and procedures by some scout leaders".

Police charged a West Australian man, 63, with aggravated indecent assault of a child under 16 while under authority.

He appeared in court on Sunday when he was granted conditional bail and was due back in Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday. - APN Newsdesk
