Prison smoking bans do little after release

DESPITE total smoking bans in most Australian jails, many prisoners will likely resume smoking following their release back into the community.

Authors of an editorial published in the Medical Journal of Australia are calling for more support to stop prisoners from smoking after serving their jail time.

Researchers also found the smoke bans helped reduce smoking and second-hand smoke, but also led to black markets in tobacco and other smokable products, poor compliance, and a possible escalation in violence.
