Near-universal support for Republic brings call for timeline

THE Greens have called for a timetable for a referendum on Australia becoming a republic, after seven of the eight state and territory leaders backed the proposal.

All state and territory leaders except Western Australia's Premier Colin Barnett signed an open letter supporting the republic proposal.

While Mr Barnett had said he supported the idea, he did not extend that support to signing the letter circulated by the Australian Republican Movement.

ARM leader Peter FitzSimons said the document showed all political leaders supported the proposal, including Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten.

Greens leader Richard Di Natale said now was the time for Mr Turnbull to lay out a timetable for a referendum to go ahead.
